I have been hard at work lately... got stuck in to trying to save the hardest working bike out of my little fleet.. my beloved mk1... anyway, first job was to separate those bars and forks and after 34yrs... they shifted easily!! thank heavens for that!! anyway, after stripping everything off, i set to work on the damaged steering tube with help from some grips, big hammer, little hammer, big screwdriver, sandpaper and a flap wheel.... and i am quite pleased with how it all came out.... then came the forks.... well i thought they were ok, but as a member of my forum pointed out on a recent rideout they were bent.. i did not realise how bad they were!! anyway, a little help from a vice and a big metal tube corrected that!! here are some pics of my work so far.... Firstly the damage to the tube..... The handlebars that luckily came out!! And the forks!!! Oh deary me!!! Another pic of the damage.... And halfway there... you can see it half straight... half lipped... Voila!! ;D ;D ;D looking nice and straight again!! Cup refitted..... ;D ;D ;D ;D And the forks attacked and straightened out.. presented them to the frame and they look ok.... Well the following day after re-assembly, a final polish and touch up painted the repaired area, i thought it was time to have a test run... only did a few miles, but i have to say.... its the best the bike has ever been.. and by the loudest click of the sturmey archer i have heard to date.. i think the old girl is happy to be back on the road again.. and to be honest... im glad to have her back......
